Okay, I’m sitting here gathering my thoughts; getting ready to write about our November Runner Spotlight, Jamie Remkes, and it’s a daunting task. Where do I start? Jamie has had such a diverse and impressive streak of running year after year, I don’t want to miss anything. Even when she’s been injured, she’s still able to string together an impressive block of race finishes. For example: Jamie is one of a handful of runners who have run the Ogden Marathon every year. She kept her streak alive a few years back (2008 I think) even with a broken foot. She ran the Ogden Marathon that year with a walking cast on her foot, and then later that same year she ran the Squaw Peak 50, Mesa Falls Marathon, Top of Utah Marathon and the St. George Marathon – unbelievable! Jamie has been running for well over 20 years, her first marathon was in St. George in 1993. Since that first marathon she’s ran all the Utah marathons multiple times in addition to the Big Sur Marathon, Valley of Fire Marathon, Tri State Marathon, Pocatello Marathon, Las Vegas Marathon, Timp Trail Marathon and a bunch of other marathons I’ve never even heard of like the Palm Beaches Marathon, Grizzly Marathon and Surf City Marathon. She’s even done the Spudman Triathlon, but Jamie has developed into a very good ultra runner. Even in this other world of (ultra) running she’s “been there and done that” with finishes at the Moab 50K, Squaw Peak 50, Big Horn 50, American River 50, Speedgoat 50K, Silver State 50K, Midnight Mountain 50K and the very tough El Vaquero Loco 50K. Jamie even got herself a 100 mile finish at the Lean Horse 100 this year with a time of 27:21. Running is a family affair in the Remkes family; Jamie ran Lean Horse with her husband (Tom) and brother-in-law (Ron). Jamie has paced Tom on many 100 miles races, but now she has one to call her own – congratulations! They run everything together; even Tom & Jamie’s kids have all run marathons. It’s so cool see the Remkes’ run in together as a family at the end of a race; 2 weeks ago at the Ogden Valley 50, they all did just that. Jamie has had a great 2011, but it’s not over yet, she has the Antelope Island 50K on Saturday. She’ll do great, there’s no doubt. We’re very fortunate to know Jamie and have her as a friend.
