Executing a race produces a multitude of expenses, some obvious, some not.  Our hats (and gratitude) go off to anybody who has taken on the task of securing permits and insurance, measuring and marking a race course, establishing a relationship with the municipality, building a website, printing posters, designing t shirts, designing medals, structuring awards, hiring a timing company, rounding up volunteers, creating a participant database, setting up registration, organizing an expo and packet pick-up, hiring police support, hiring medical support, planning food for hundreds to thousands of people, writing and executing a transportation plan, answering questions via phone calls and emails and soliciting for sponsorship money.  There's all this and the very real possibility you're probably going to lose money after it's all said and done.  Every race is different and have their own agendas and issues to deal with.  This is why race registration fees in Utah can range from $30- $80 (marathon & 1/2 marathon). I have to believe every race director charges what he/she needs to; not only to stage a respectable event, but just so the event survives another year.  I would bet any (good) race director would (or could) articulate the reasoning for the race entrance fee for his/her event.  The nice thing about running in Utah (and the region) is we have lots of options for racing.  Here's a list of some of the local races and their registration fees:

Event money comes in through registration fees and sponsorship dollars.  Many race directors need to pay for the bulk of their expenses up-front, which is why some races offer a cheaper rate if you register early.  It also makes for better planning and budgeting when you know how many runners you need to accomodate. Every event is a little different, but here's an example of where all the money goes:

Security/Police - 4%
Transportation - 15%
Portable toilets - 10%
Timing - 4%
Start/finish line - 5%
Insurance/permits - 4%
Race shirts - 15%
