Congratulations to all the OV50 Runners!!!
Running 50 miles is a crazy, daunting task. If you don't come prepared mentally and physically for one of these things, it's not going to be good. Let's give these folks the credit and props they deserve.
This year we had 22 brave souls who lined up at 5am in 18 degree temperatures for a 50 mile adventure. Shane Martin was back to defend his 4 previous wins and remain the Ogden Valley champion, but he will have his hands full with first time OV50 runner, and former Weber State cross country standout, Scott Dickey. In the 4 person female race we had 2011 winner and course record holder Sariah Long up against newcomer Sylvia Pond and veterans Tara Low and Mette Harrison.
This year we had three Orgill brothers who wanted to spend some quality time together for 50 miles and father/son combo; Ron and Cole Castleton. In all, it was a fun and determined group of runners.
With the snow storm that pummeled northern Utah 2 days prior, 2012 will go down as the coldest and frostiest OV50 to date. 18 degrees to start the race, but once the runners dropped into Ogden Valley, Pineview reservoir emitted a dense fog that dropped the temperature down to 11 degrees. As the sun came up, Pineview looked liked a big witches caldron with all the mist coming off it.
It was a three person contest 20 miles into the race between Shane, Scott and Sariah. Chad, Taud and Sylvia maintained a strong pace into the Valley. Tim and Paul looked like they were having the most fun. Spencer's water bottle froze up; water wasn't going in or out. Ron was plugging away like he's done this dozens and dozens of times.
Troy Vigil was only supposed to come out for a few hours to help runners though some turns on the course, but instead he loaded up the back seat of his car with a 5 gallon Gatorade cooler and a box of food and crewed the race for 8 hours. He saved the day for us and many of the runners. Thanks Troy!
Lauren and Greydin Morin spent many quality hours together at O-dark-thirty helping a herd of frozen, hungry and stinky runners. Lauren's brother, Hunter, not wanting to miss out on any fun, showed up mid-morning to help crew the runners to the finish (thank you Kurt & Holly for the use of your Jeep).
Mike Rosner ran the aid station at mile 27 and consumed a brownie-bite for every runner he helped get through that aid station. Mike is like a Super Hero, he shows up at exactly the right time, saves the day, then heads home before anybody can thank him. All he needs is a cape and some red tights. Thanks Uncle Mike!
Nate Graven, along with Cory, from Graven Sports Therapy offered some much needed bodywork to the runners after they finished. No doubt, many of these runners were walking around on Sunday only because of the work those two did on some swollen and beat-down legs. You can track Nate and his crew down at 801-698-1910. They have a very nice facility in South Ogden that services to all your sports therapy needs.
There was a very nice boy who called himself Seth who was at the finish line helping runners. He served food, poured drinks, fetched dry clothes, helped take shoes off, acted like a crutch for limping runners...all in all, he was a tremendous help. Thanks Seth!
Kristin is always the rock star at the OV50 and this year she had our rock star son, Shad, there to help pull this thing off. As many of you know, the OV50 is a labor of love; mostly labor. Thanks for all the kind words after the race; it does help our decision on whether or not to stage this race year after year.
We're proud to say we had 21 of 22 runners finish the 2012 OV50. Sariah has been pregnant the last nine months and gave birth to her 2nd boy a couple of months ago. After basically running a 3 hour marathon, she made the wise decision of pulling out and giving her body some more time to rest and recover. My money says she'll be back stronger than ever next year.
In the end, Shane ran to his 5th victory at the OV50 with Scott Dickey right on his heels. Chad James rounded out the top 3 male finishers with a solid performance for his first 50 mile race.
On the women's side, Sylvia Pond was strong and consistent all day and took home the victory, and $100 in STRIDERS bucks! Tara Low skipped and jumped her way to 2nd place (as you'll see in the video) and Mette battled strong to finish this one for 3rd place. Mette has a new novel coming out we're excited to tell you about once it hits book shelves.
A key achievement to note is that one of the Orgill brothers ran the whole 50 miles in a pair of Vibram Five Fingers. Next year I want to see him run it in Vibrams, jeans and a cotton shirt...we'll see how tough he really is :-)
Thanks and Happy Halloween; hope you enjoy the video.
